Eriobotrya deflexa (Bronze Loquat)

Bronze Loquat

Eriobotrya deflexa, Bronze Loquat, Evergreen Tree, Fruit Tree

Eriobotrya deflexa (Bronze Loquat) is an evergreen small tree of rounded, spreading habit with handsome, oblong, shiny dark green leaves, up to 12 in. long (30 cm). The new foliage emerges bright copper and holds that color for a long time before turning dark green. Garlands of small white, fragrant flowers are produced in spring. Shining against the foliage, they are followed by small, inedible fruits. They attract birds, squirrels, and other mammals. Thanks to its neat and compact habit, Bronze Loquat can be used as a specimen, grown in patio containers, or espaliered. Due to its dense canopy, it can easily be trained as a standard or used as a screen.

  • Grows up to 15-25 ft. tall and wide (450-750 cm). Adds 36 in. per year (90 cm).
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, well-drained soils. It provides the best fruit and shape when grown in full sun.
  • Perfect as a specimen or accent plant, screen, or espalier.
  • Looks best with regular pruning to maintain its shape.
  • Generally pest-free. Keep an eye out for fire blight.
  • Propagate by seed.
  • Native to Taiwan and Southern Vietnam.
