Linum narbonense (Blue Flax)

Blue Flax, Narbonne Flax

One of the best Flax for the garden, Linum narbonense (Blue Flax) is a compact, mound-forming, semi-evergreen perennial with lance-shaped, dark green leaves and profuse azure blue, funnel-shaped flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm), over a long season. Each flower is adorned with a clear white center and white stamens, which contribute to a lovely bicolor effect. Blooming for weeks in late spring to midsummer, the blossoms are borne in open clusters atop wiry stems. Even when Linum narbonense is not in bloom, the plant adds texture and substance in the garden. Long-lived, drought tolerant, this Mediterranean blue flax is perfect garden borders, wildflower gardens and informal plantings.

  • Grows up to 18-24 in. tall (45-60 cm) and 18 in. wide (45 cm). Tends to self-seed when happy.
  • Thrives in full sun in dry to medium, humus-rich, well-drained soils. Protect from winter wet.
  • Great for rock gardens, cottage gardens, containers.
  • No serious insect or disease issues. Keep an eye out for slugs, snails and aphids. Deer resistant.
  • Propagate by seed or stem tip cuttings. Sow in situ in spring. In areas with mild areas, sow in late summer.
  • Native to Southern Europe.
