Lupinus polyphyllus (Bigleaf Lupine)
Bigleaf Lupine, Blue-pod Lupine, Meadow Lupine, Bog Lupine
Very showy, Lupinus polyphyllus (Bigleaf Lupine) is a robust herbaceous perennial boasting large, rich-green, palmate leaves divided into 9-17 leaflets and elongated dense clusters of deep-blue to purple pea-shaped flowers. Blooming in late spring, they are borne on stout, ascending stems, well above the foliage. They are attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds and many pollinators. The spectacular blossoms are followed by brown pods, 1.5 in. long ( 4 cm), covered with woolly hairs and containing 5-9 spotted seeds. Formerly widely grown as an attractive addition to flower borders and cottage gardens, Lupinus polyphyllus is one of the parents in crosses that formed the renowned Russell Hybrids. Very desirable in a wetland garden, it looks breathtaking when planted in mass.
