A classic ingredient of the perennial border, peony flowers add a dazzling splash of color in the landscape. Peonies flower for a relatively short period of time, approximately 7-10 days. However, they do not flower at the same time and are classified with a blooming time, ranging from Very Early to Very Late season. Therefore, to fill your garden with continuously blooming peonies throughout the season, you may elect to plant a variety of cultivars, from Very Early- to Very Late season bloomers.
To help you plan your late spring or early summer garden, here is a plant combination, in shades of white and lavender, which includes 3 fabulous peonies that will bloom in succession: 'Miss America' (Early Midseason), 'Cheddar Charm' (Midseason) and 'Bowl of Cream' (Late Midseason).
They are interplanted with 3 superb Tall Bearded Irises with different flowering seasons for a longer display, 'Belgian Princess' (Midseason), 'Hold My Hand' (Late Midseason) and 'Twilight Rapture' (Late Season).
All are combined with 2 architectural Lupines, 'Manhattan Lights and 'Gallery Yellow', a dwarf Delphinium 'Magic Fountain Lavender' and the dense lavender fluffy panicles of Meadow Rue (Thalictrum aquilegifolium).
Most plants make excellent fresh cut flowers that can be pleasantly enjoyed at home!
