Maackia amurensis (Amur Maackia)

Amur Maackia

Maackia amurensis, Amur Maackia, Fragrant Tree, Shade Tree, Street Tree

Hardy and slow-growing, Maackia amurensis (Amur Maackia) is a small, deciduous tree with a broad, rounded canopy of attractive dark olive green leaves divided into 5-7 leaflets. The foliage often drops in fall without significantly changing color. In early summer, dense, erect panicles, up to 8 in. long (20 cm), of fragrant, white, pea-like flowers are on display. Attractive to pollinators, they are followed by flat seed pods, 2-3 in. long (5-7 cm). The shiny, coppery-bronze bark exfoliates with age into loose flakes and curls. Very easy to grow, Amur Maackia adds a pleasing presence in the landscape and makes a lovely street or shade tree for lawns and patio containers.

  • Usually grows up to 20-30 ft. tall and wide (6-9 m).
  • A full sun lover, this plant is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerates part shade but full sun is preferred. It is not fussy about soils and adapts to a wide range of soil conditions.
  • Low maintenance, this plant is also generally pest and disease free.
  • Native to Russia, eastern Asia.
