Noted for its blue color, Phyllostachys glauca (Hedge Bamboo) is a remarkable evergreen bamboo with tall, upright, bright green canes covered in blue-white waxy powder when young, creating a blue-green effect. After losing the powder, the culms, up to 2 in. wide (5 cm), mature to yellow-green. Fairly upright in habit, they contrast nicely with the long, broad leaves, up to 7 in. (18 cm), which are bright green on their upper surface and dull matte green beneath. Vigorous, this most attractive bamboo runs freely in warm conditions, but remains almost static in cool temperate climates. It can withstand drier conditions than most varieties and enjoys an excellent drought tolerance. Steadily spreading to form an open grove, it also makes a very beautiful hedge or privacy screen. Hardiness: 14 to -4ºF (-10 to -20ºC)

  • Grows up to 15-25 ft. tall (4-8 m) and 15-20 ft. wide (4-6 m).
  • A full sun lover, it is best grown in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils. Tolerates part shade but prefers full sun.
  • Keep an eye out for snugs and snails.
  • Remove weak, dead, damaged or spindly stems in spring and thin to show off stems to best effect. Cut out any flowering shoots promptly to discourage more from forming.
  • Propagate by seed or division.
  • Native to China
