Phyllostachys viridiglaucescens (Green-Glaucous Bamboo) is a robust evergreen bamboo with tall, upright, powdery lime-green canes adorned with white node stripes. Emerald green at first, the smooth culms, up to 2 in. wide (5 cm), mature to yellow-green. Held in bunches, the leaves are long and broad, up to 7 in. in length (18 cm), bright green on their upper surface and glaucous beneath. Easy to grow, this running bamboo forms a lovely thicket in ideal conditions. Useful as an informal hedge or screen. Hardy to -4ºF (-20ºC).

  • Grows up to 15-25 ft. tall (4-8 m) and 8-15 ft. wide (2-5 m).
  • A full sun or partial shade lover, it is best grown in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils. Should remain as a large thicket but may become invasive in warm, moist or optimum conditions. Green-Glaucous Bamboo dislikes exposed conditions.
  • Usually disease free. Keep an eye out for snugs and snails.
  • Remove weak, dead, damaged or spindly stems in spring and thin to show off stems to best effect. Cut out any flowering shoots promptly to discourage more from forming.
  • Propagate by seed or division.
  • Native to China
