Handsome and fragrant, Polygonatum odoratum 'Variegatum' (Fragrant Solomon's Seal) is a rhizomatous, shade-loving perennial with slightly arching stems covered with sweetly scented, vase-shaped, creamy-white flowers tipped with green in late spring to early summer. Gracefully hanging from the leaf axils, they are followed in fall by attractive blue-black berries. Highly ornamental, the elegant foliage of bright green, elliptic leaves is splashed and streaked with creamy white and turns attractive shades of yellow in fall. Native to shaded slopes and woodland areas in temperate regions of Europe and Asia, Variegated Solomon’s Seal is a classic beauty for the shady woodland garden or the part-shade to full-shade border
- Grows up to 2-3 ft. tall (60-90 cm) and spreads 9-12 in. (22-30 cm). Slowly spreads by rhizomes to form colonies in satisfactory growing conditions.
- Perennial Plant Association’s 2013 Perennial Plant of the Year
- Part shade to full shade lover, it is best grown in fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soils. Prefers cool sun-dappled shady areas and dislikes hot summer conditions. Drought, dry soil, wet soil tolerant.
- Perfect for shade gardens and woodland gardens, mixed with other perennials, as groundcover, underplanting shrubs or in shady areas of rock gardens. A great companion plant to other shade lovers including hostas, ferns, and astilbes. Flower arrangers will find the variegated foliage to be fabulous for spring floral arrangements.
- Virtually pest-free, disease-free and low maintenance but watch for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
- Cut back to the base in late fall.
- Propagate by division in spring taking care not to damage young, brittle shoots
- All parts may cause severe discomfort if ingested
