Ranunculus flammula, Lesser Spearwort, Miniature Spearwort, Creeping Spearwort, Tongue Buttercup, Yellow Flowers, Marginal Aquatics, Pond Plants, Aquatic Plants

Ranunculus flammula (Lesser Spearwort) is a clump-forming, marginal, aquatic perennial prized for its cup-shaped, brilliant yellow flowers, 1/3 in. (less than 1 cm), resembling buttercups. Blooming in summer, each solitary flower usually features 5 egg-shaped petals surrounding a bouquet of yellow stamens gathered around green styles. Borne on slender stalks ascending from the leafy nodes of the creeping stem, they float above the foliage of semi-upright, red-flushed, narrowly lance-shaped, green leaves. The stems creep along the ground and root at the nodes, creating a dense tangled mat of stems and leaves. Great for the pond edge, this sprawling plant grows both above and below the water surface.

  • Grows up to 12-24 in. tall (30-60 cm) and 12 in. wide (30 cm). This plant readily self-seeds and spreads via running stolons.
  • Performs best in full sun to part shade in still of slow-moving water at the margins of a pond or water garden or in wet, boggy soils. Can grow in shallow water up to 6-9 in. deep (15-22 cm).
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Deer resistant.
  • Propagate by seed in a cold frame as soon as ripe or by division.
  • All parts are poisonous if ingested. Sap may irritate skin.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
  • Native to Europe, Northwestern Africa, Western Asia, North America.
