Ranunculus gramineus (Grass-Leaved Buttercup) is an herbaceous perennial forming a tuft of narrow, grass-like, gray-green to blue-green leaves, 8 in. long (20 cm). In spring and early summer, it produces a profusion of bright yellow, cup-shaped flowers on slender, erect stems about a 12 in. tall (30 cm). Quite small, 3/4 in. wide (2 cm), the blossoms can be solitary or in groups of three. Native to well-drained Alpine meadows of Southern Europe and North Africa, Grass-Leaved Buttercup goes into dormancy in late summer, when its foliage dies back to the ground. In mild climates leaves reappear in the fall. A cute perennial plant for the rock garden or perennial border.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 12-20 in. tall (30-50 cm) and 3-4 in. wide (7-10 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun to part shade in fertile, moist but well drained soil.
  • Great candidate for beds and borders, edging, city gardens, cottage gardens, coastal gardens, rock gardens or containers.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for aphids, slugs, snails or powdery mildew.
  • Propagate by seed in containers as soon as ripe and placed in a cold frame, or divide mature plants in the spring or autumn.
  • All parts are poisonous if ingested. Sap may irritate skin.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
  • Native to the Western Mediterranean; Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy (including Sardinia), and Switzerland.
