Asiatic lilies are a group of hybrid lilies, scientifically known as Lilium, and are amongst the earliest to bloom in the lily family, typically appearing in early to mid-summer. They are beloved by gardeners due to their wide range of colors, ease of cultivation, and striking, upward-facing flowers.

Asiatic Lilies Profile

  • Asiatic Lilies are among the earliest to bloom in early-mid summer and the easiest to grow.
  • Asiatic Lilies offer a wide array of colors, from the softest pastels to fiery reds and oranges that practically ignite when the sun shines on them.
  • Asiatic Lilies bear 4-6 inches blossoms (10-15 cm) on 2-5 feet tall plants (60-150 cm).
  • Asiatic Lilies feature straight stems, high bud counts, and generally brightly spotted blossoms and vary in shape from simple open bowls to flowers with exquisitely recurved petals.
  • Vigorous, long-lived, Asiatic Lilies seldom need staking.
  • Asiatic Lilies enjoy a long blooming season (up to 1 month), but most are unscented.

Growing Asiatic Lilies

  • Asiatic lilies are easy to grow and adaptable to a variety of conditions, making them an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. They perform best in full sun to partial shade and prefer well-drained, loamy, or sandy soil. They are hardy in USDA zones 4 through 8, making them versatile across various climates.
  • In terms of planting, Asiatic lilies should be planted in the fall or early spring. Bulbs should be set 3 times as deep as the bulb’s height to protect them and provide support for the stem.
  • Asiatic lilies are perfect for mixed borders, cutting gardens, and containers. They make excellent cut flowers, allowing you to bring a splash of color indoors. Moreover, they attract butterflies and other pollinators, contributing to the garden’s biodiversity.

It’s important to note that lily leaves and flowers can be toxic to cats, causing severe kidney damage if ingested. Therefore, they should be planted away from areas where cats may access them.
