Athyrium niponicum var. pictum ‘Ursula’s Red’ (Painted Lady Fern) is a striking deciduous fern forming a pretty rosette of arching, triangular , silver fronds with contrasting dark reddish stipes. Emerging flushed with wine red down the center, the foliage fades to silvery-green as the season progresses. Slowly spreading, this fern adds elegance to the shade garden or containers. Perfect for brightening up a dark or shady garden area, plant this graceful fern in drifts and underplant with small, early flowering bulbs, such as snowdrops (Galanthus), as these will appear before the fronds, extending the season of interest of your planting. Best color is obtained in light to medium shade.

  • Grows up to 24 in. tall and wide (60 cm).
  • Performs best in part shade to full shade in fertile, humus-rich, neutral to acid, moist but well-drained soils. Do not allow the soil to dry out. Will tolerate full sun, if consistent moisture is provided. Provide a sheltered location.
  • This plant is a great choice for shady beds and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens, woodland gardens or patio containers.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Deer resistant.
  • Dead or damaged fronds may be removed as necessary.
  • Propagate by division in spring
