Chaenomeles speciosa Double Take® Scarlet (Flowering Quince) is a compact, rounded, deciduous shrub with abundant clusters of huge, double flowers resembling camellias, 2 in. across (5 cm), packed with up to 17-25 bright scarlet petals. Borne on thornless branches, they bloom in profusion over a long season extending from early to late spring. The flowers emerge before the oval, glossy dark green leaves fully unfold in early spring and extend to the tips of branches. Very tolerant of heat and dry conditions, combine this pretty Flowering Quince with daffodils and tulips and enjoy a cheerful spring scene. Excellent for hedging, mass planting, and cutting gardens.

  • Grows up to 4-5 ft. tall (120-150 cm) and 3-4 ft. wide (90-120 cm).
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils. In cold climates, plant in full sun for the very best flower color. In warmer areas, some afternoon shade will help flowers last longer. Adapts to a wide range of soil conditions, including dry soils and clay soils, provided there is good drainage. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Easy to care for and nearly indestructible, Flowering Quince is a perfect choice for mixed shrub borders or flowering hedges. Great as a specimen plant and for foundation plantings. Flowering Quince may also be trained against a wall.
  • Deer resistant.
  • Plants bloom on old growth. Prune to shape after flowering. Apply a controlled-release fertilizer in spring.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings.
