Cypripedium guttatum (Spotted Lady’s Slipper Orchid) is a hardy terrestrial orchid boasting distinctive flowers with purple spots and blotches on their sepals, petals, and inflated pouch. Blooming from early to mid-summer, the sophisticated flowers are borne, singly or in pairs, atop upright stems bearing 2 ovate to elliptic, ribbed, bright green leaves. Ravishing, this plant spreads by creeping rhizomes to form a charming colony in favorable conditions. Cypripedium guttatum is widely distributed across Asia and found in Alaska, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories, where it grows in moist to dry open deciduous and spruce forests, slopes and banks, tundra, and meadows.

  • Grows up to 4-14 in. tall (10-35 cm).
  • Thrives in part shade in moist to dry, well-drained soils
  • Excellent choice for borders, cottage gardens, and containers.
  • Propagate by division in early or mid-spring and replant immediately. Some soil from the root ball, which contains beneficial fungi, should be planted with each division.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for slugs and gray molds.
  • Native to Belarus, Russia, China, Korea, Mongolia, Bhutan, Alaska, and northern Canada.
