Tibetan Lady's Slipper Orchid, Cypripedium compactum, Cypripedium corrugatum, Cypripedium corrugatum v. obesum, Cypripedium lanuginosum, Cypripedium macranthum v. corrugatum, Cypripedium macranthum v. tibeticum.

Cypripedium tibeticum (Tibetan Lady's Slipper Orchid) is a hardy terrestrial orchid forming a small clump of up to 3-4 pubescent elliptic to nearly ovate leaves. In spring, charming flowers are borne, usually, one per stem, atop a thick, glabrous stem that can reach 14 in. (35 cm). The blossoms feature a highly corrugated pouch, richly flushed with burgundy, backed by boldly striated sepals and petals. Native to the high mountain meadows, scrub forests, and forest margins of Bhutan, Sikkim, and China, Tibetan Lady's Slipper Orchid can form sizable colonies, with dozens of flowering plants, or simply grow here and there in small groups. To thrive, this hardy orchid requires a long winter rest and does not tolerate winter wetness. It needs to be kept cool and moist in summer and cold and dry in winter.

  • Grows up to 8-12 in. tall(20-30 cm).
  • Thrives in very bright shade in moist, sharply-drained soils. This plant does not like acidic conditions. Fertilizing can be done throughout the growing season. Keep the soil dry in winter.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Native to Bhutan, Sikkim, and China (Gansu, Guizhou, Sichuan, Tibet, Yunnan).
