Cypripedium macranthos (Lady’s Slipper Orchid) is a hardy terrestrial orchid with oblong, alternate, slightly hairy leaves and pink-mauve flowers in late spring and early summer. The charming blossoms are borne, single or in pairs, atop upright stems. They feature a large violet to reddish-purple pouch backed by darker veined sepals. Native to China, Russia, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, Cypripedium macranthos is very hardy and will survive the winter, even when exposes to -22°F (-30°C).

  • Grows up to 20 in. tall (50 cm).
  • Thrives in partial shade in moist, almost neutral, well-drained soils. The plant should be watered abundantly during the growing season. Reduce watering in the fall and winter. Fertilize on a weekly basis with 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. Provide a thick layer of mulch in the fall.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Native to China, Russia, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
