Dudleya cymosa (Canyon Dudleya)

Canyon Dudleya, Canyon Live-forever, Canyon Liveforever, Dudleya, Rock Lettuce

Prized for its colorful floral display, Dudleya cymosa (Canyon Dudleya) is an evergreen succulent with pretty rosettes, 4-6 in. across (10-15 cm), of wide, flattened, grayish-green leaves. The thick leaves often display bright red coloring along their edges and tips in the driest conditions. In mid-spring to early summer, the rosettes send up erect red-orange flower spikes which bear clusters of small yellowish-red thimble-shaped flowers prized by hummingbirds and butterflies. The flowers are exceptionally beautiful and bright. This plant offsets and multiplies by producing new rosettes. Found in rocky areas in the low elevation mountains of California and southern Oregon, Canyon Dudleya is one of the hardiest dudleyas. A lovely plant and a great choice for rock gardens or containers.

  • Grows up to 4-6 in. tall and wide (10-15 cm).
  • Easily grown in dry, rocky, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Tolerates full sun in cool, coastal regions, but prefers afternoon shade in warmer areas. This succulent is drought tolerant and does not need supplemental water in summer.
  • Perfect for rock gardens, Mediterranean gardens, or containers.
  • Virtually disease free. Deer resistant.
  • Propagate by seed, stem cuttings, and division. Propagating Dudleya plants with seeds is very difficult.
  • Native to California.
