Encelia actoni (Acton Encelia)

Acton Encelia, Acton Brittlebush, Acton's Brittlebush

Fast growing and easy to grow, Encelia actoni (Acton Encelia) is a much-branched shrub with slender stems bearing alternate, gray-green, triangular to ovate leaves, 2 in. long (5 cm). Profuse daisy-like flowers with 14-25 bright yellow rays surrounding darker center disks are borne singly at the ends of the stems in early spring to mid summer. Rich in nectar, they attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Handling cold, sun and wind, Acton Encelia is a good choice for mixed borders or perennial beds in water-wise gardens.

  • Grows up to 2-5 ft. tall (60-150 cm) and 3 ft. wide (90 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun, in sandy, well-drained soils. Very limited to no supplemental irrigation once established. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Great for water-wise gardens, wildlife gardens and habitat restoration projects.
  • Generally pest and disease free.
  • Native to southern California, Nevada, Baja California.
