Eriophyllum lanatum (Oregon Sunshine)
Oregon Sunshine, Sunshine Flower, Common Woolly Sunflower, Golden Yarrow, Yarrow Leaved Eriophyllum, Dwarf Woolly Sunflower, Pursh’s Woolyleaf
Eriophyllum lanatum (Oregon Sunshine) is a compact perennial forming a low cushion of silvery leaves, 1-3 in. long (2-7 cm), irregularly divided into narrow lobes. Both stems and leaves are covered with white hairs. Blooming freely in summer, brilliant golden-yellow daisy flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm), rise on long, gray stems. Resembling sunflowers, they attract bees and butterflies. They give way to narrow, smooth seeds. Easy to grow, Oregon Sunshine can be used in perennial borders, along pathways, and in rock gardens and embankments. Great for dry, rocky or sandy soil.
- Grows up to 1-2 ft wide (30-60 cm) and 1-2 ft. wide (30-60 cm). Eriophyllum lanatum is a prolific seed producer and will rapidly spread to any surrounding open ground. If plant spread is not desired, flower heads should be removed prior to seed ripening.
- Prefers full sun to light shade and enjoys dry to medium, well-drained soils. Needs very little water once established. Drought tolerant.
- Oregon Sunshine is a favorite of birds and butterflies but is ignored by deer.
- It is a welcomed addition to beds and borders, naturalized areas or cottage gardens. Best in groups or massed.
- No serious pest or disease issues.
- Propagate by seed.
- Native to western North America.
