Fargesia robusta ‘Campbell’ (Bamboo)

Fargesia robusta 'Campbell', Evergreen Bamboo, Shade plants, shade perennial, plants for shade, plants for wet soil

A magnificent selection, Fargesia robusta ‘Campbell’ (Bamboo) is an elegant, evergreen, clump-forming bamboo with tall and slender, rich deep green canes adorned with pale, almost white, semi-persistent culm sheaths, creating a striking bicolor display in the spring through early summer. The new shoots are produced prolifically, forming an impenetrable clump, however the plant can be more open if grown in shade. Long and narrow, up to 7 in. long (18 cm), the leaves are glossy bright green on the upper surface, dull gray-green beneath. Tough and easy to grow, this non-invasive bamboo is more sun tolerant than most other Fargesia bamboos, its robust leaves taking the sun without curling. It is also more drought tolerant. Retaining its foliage almost intact during the winter months, it makes a remarkably beautiful tall hedge or screen. One of the most popular bamboos for the landscape. Hardy to -4ºF (-20ºC).

  • Grows up to 10-15 ft. tall (300-450 cm).
  • A full sun to part shade lover, it is best grown in fertile, moist but well-drained soils.
  • Great choice for hedges and screens, city gardens, along ponds and streams and containers.
  • Virtually disease free. Keep an eye out for slugs. Deer resistant.
  • Remove weak, dead, damaged or spindly stems in spring and thin to show off stems to best effect. Cut out any flowering shoots promptly to discourage more from forming.
  • Propagate by division or take cuttings of sections of young rhizomes in spring
  • Native to China
