Slow-growing, Cotoneaster horizontalis (Rock Cotoneaster) is a spreading, deciduous shrub with flat and stiff, regularly-branched sprays in a strict herring-bone pattern. The branches are studded with small, glossy leaves that turn orange and red in fall. Small, 5-petaled, pink-tinged white flowers are produced in late spring. Attractive to bees, they are followed by brilliant scarlet berries which ripen in late summer to fall and provide one of the most cheering sights in the garden. Easy to grow, Rock Cotoneaster makes a very attractive ground cover and looks lovely when draped over the edge of walls or large rocks. Birds are very fond of berries.

  • Grows up in a bushy, densely-branched shrub up to 2-3 ft. tall (60-90 cm) and 6-8 ft. wide (180-240 cm). This plant is a prolific self-sower. You may need to remove unwanted seedlings every year to control their growth.
  • This plant is easily grown in full sun to partial shade in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Excellent ground cover. Perfect for banks and slopes (erosion control), hedging and screens, or cascading over walls.
  • Prune to shape as needed.
  • Propagate by seed or semi-hardwood cuttings.
  • Native to China.
  • Fruit may cause mild stomach upset if ingested
