Magnificent in flower, Inula helenium (Elecampane) is a robust, upright perennial boasting sunflower-like blossoms, 2-3 in. across (5-9 cm), from mid-summer to early fall. Usually clustered in groups of 2-3 flowers, each flower features a dark center disc surrounded by scraggly yellow rays. They are borne on tall stems clad with hairy ovate leaves. The toothed, narrowly elliptic, basal leaves can reach 3 ft. in length (90cm), although 1-2 ft. (30-60 cm) is more common. Held on long petioles, up to 1 ft. (30 cm), they provide interest when the plant in not in bloom. Known for its many health benefits and high therapeutic value, Inula helenium is also impressive in the garden, becoming the star of the border during its blooming season.
- Grows up to 3-6 ft. tall (90-180 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm). May require staking if planted in windy situation.
- Enjoys full sun or part shade in deep, rich, moist well-drained soils.
- Provides a lovely vertical accent in the garden. Very useful and adaptable, it is well suited for beds and borders, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, prairies and meadows.
