A Pretty Duo to Try: Asclepias and Salvia

Plant Combinations, Flowerbeds Ideas, Summer Borders

Garden ideas, Border ideas, Plant Combinations, Flowerbeds Ideas, Summer Borders, Asclepias tuberosa, Milkweed, Salvia verticillata, Butterfly Flower, Butterfly Root, Butterfly Weed, Orange flowers, Purple Flowers

Fairly easy to replicate, this eye-catching plant combination includes a couple of spectacular elements which almost thrive on neglect while providing striking color and contrast for weeks. Among them is Salvia verticillata ‘Purple Rain’, a popular hardy Salvia that is welcomed in many gardens. It is paired with Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Weed), a bushy perennial prized for its brilliant clusters of bright orange flowers which bloom continuously throughout summer.

Low maintenance, pest and disease-free, deer and drought tolerant, this planting will attract scores of butterflies. Milkweed plants are critical to the monarch butterflies survival, whose population in North America has plummeted by 90% in the last 20 years. By planting milkweed in your own garden, you can help reverse the fortune of these beautiful insects!
