Juniperus sabina (Savin Juniper)

Savin Juniper

Juniperus sabina, Savin Juniper, Evergreen Shrub

Exceedingly tough, Juniperus sabina (Savin Juniper) is a shrubby evergreen conifer of spreading or creeping habit with slender shoots clothed with dark green, scale-like leaves which do not turn purple in winter. Aromatic, the foliage gives off a fetid smell when crushed. The red-brown bark peels in strips on mature stems. Valued for its decorative effect throughout the year, this small Juniper makes a wonderful specimen plant or hedge. Great for erosion control.

  • Grows up to 4-6 ft. tall (120-180 cm) and 5-10 ft. wide (150-300 cm).
  • A full sun lover, this plant is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerates a wide range of soils including clay soils. Drought tolerant once established. Intolerant of wet soils.
  • Perfect as a specimen plant. Great for coastal gardens, city gardens, cottage gardens, foundation plantings, banks and slopes or hedges.
  • Low maintenance, no pruning required.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings.
  • Native to central and Southern Europe.
