Performing admirably with no care, Juniperus virginiana ‘Canaertii’ (Eastern Red Cedar) is a densely columnar to broadly pyramidal evergreen conifer, becoming loose and open with age. Aromatic, the scale-like, dark green foliage retains good green color in winter. ‘Canaertii’ is a female conifer that produces round, dark purple-blue, berry-like cones covered with white wax which gives them an overall sky-blue color. The fruit is produced in abundance and is highly ornamental. Many wildlife species feast on the juicy juniper berries during the winter. The dense growth and attractive foliage of this Eastern Red Cedar make it excellent for windbreaks, screens, and wildlife cover. Its high salt tolerance makes it ideal for seaside locations.

  • Grows up to 20-35 ft. tall (6-11 m) and 8-15 ft. wide (2-4.5 m).
  • A full sun lover, this plant is easily grown in any, dry to medium, well-drained soil. Tolerates a wide range of soils including dry, rocky soils. Drought tolerant once established it does not do well on soils kept continually moist.
  • Perfect as a specimen plant or for city gardens since Red Cedar is tolerant of pollution.
  • Low maintenance, no pruning required.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for cedar apple rust, aphids, juniper scale, and caterpillars.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings
  • Juniperus virginiana is native to eastern North America.
