Koelreuteria bipinnata (Chinese Flame Tree) is an elegant small deciduous tree with a vase-shaped, eventually flat-topped canopy of bipinnately compound, lustrous rich green leaves, 12-24 in. long (30-60 cm). The foliage turns golden yellow in the fall before dropping to the ground. In summer, a profusion of rich yellow flowers appear in immense clusters, 12-24 in. long (30-60 cm), at the tips of the branches. They last several weeks and create a most spectacular floral display. The flowers are followed by hanging clusters of papery, lantern-like seed capsules. These turn pink to rose and persist for 3-5 weeks. They retain their pink color after drying and are very popular for use in everlasting flower arrangements. The heavy crop of stunning flowers, handsome foliage, fall color, ornamental fruit, and drought tolerance make Chinese Flame Tree a desirable tree. Popular as a landscape or shade tree, it is an excellent specimen tree that deserves a prominent position in the landscape.
