Ludwigia sedioides (Mosaic Flower)
Mosaic Flower, False Loosestrife
Ludwigia sedioides (Mosaic Flower) is an emergent aquatic perennial forming attractive rosettes, 3-6 in. wide (7-15 cm), of red and green diamond-shaped leaves. Reminiscent of mosaics, they float on the water surface, contracting at night and spreading out again during daylight hours. The edges of central and older leaves turn bright red when the plant is grown under bright light. In summer, the plant boasts cup-shaped bright yellow flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm), in the leaf axils. Mosaic Flower performs best in water that has reached at least 72ºF (22ºC). Native to Brazil and Venezuela, this charming tropical plant occurs naturally in wet, swampy localities. The stems that grow from soil reach the surface, where vigorous running growth spreads across the surface of the water. Mosaic Flower provides quick surface cover and can be utilized in ponds, water gardens, or containers.
- Grows up to 3 in. tall (7 cm) and 1-2 ft. wide (30-60 cm).
- Performs best in full sun in heavy loam soil in a container that is at least 4 in. (10 cm) in diameter at a water depth of 12-24 in. (30-60 cm).
- No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for leaf spot and rust.
- Propagate by stem cuttings.
- Overwinter indoors in non-tropical climates in a well-lighted aquarium.
- Native to Brazil and Venezuela.
- Ludwigia sedioides is an ornamental aquatic plant recognized as a potential invasive in Sri Lanka.
