Luzula nivea (Snowy Wood Rush)

Snowy Wood Rush, Snow-Wood-Rush, Luzula 'Nivea'

Luzula nivea, Snowy Wood Rush, Snow-Wood-Rush, Luzula 'Nivea', best groundcover, perennial groundcover, perennial for shade, shade perennial

Luzula nivea (Snowy Wood Rush) is a slowly spreading evergreen perennial with fairly dense clusters of shimmering white flower spikes in early and mid-summer. The plant forms a loose clump of narrow, rich, green leaves, 12 in. long (30 cm) edged with fine hairs. Valuable year-round, thanks to its evergreen foliage, Luzula nivea is often used as a groundcover or for edging paths, particularly in shady spots of the landscape.

  • Typically grows up to 24 in. tall (60 cm) and 18-24 in. wide (45-60 cm). Self-seeds freely in the garden.
  • Performs best in part shade or full shade, in poor to moderately fertile, moist, humus rich, and well-drained soils. Intolerant of full sun on poor dry soil but will tolerate sun if the soil is constantly moist. Dry shade tolerant.
  • Easy to grow, this plant requires low maintenance and is a fabulous addition to shady areas where it can grow as an effective groundcover.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Propagate by seed sown in containers outdoors in spring or autumn; divide between mid-spring and early summer.
  • Native to Southwestern and Central Europe, including the Alps and Pyrenees.
