A very showy bog orchid, Platanthera blephariglottis (White Fringed Orchid) is a stout herbaceous perennial boasting large cylindrical clusters of up to 20-50 white flowers adorned with deeply fringed lip petals. Attractive to butterflies and moths, each flower has a slender spur curving below and behind the lip of the orchid. Blooming for about a month in mid to late summer, the inflorescences are borne atop unbranched leafy stems clad with alternately arranged leaves. The leaves on the lower part of the stem are lance-shaped, with smooth edges. The upper leaves are much smaller. White Fringed Orchids are wetland plants which are found mainly in bogs and peaty open wetlands in sphagnum. Throughout their North American range, they can be seen growing in bogs, fens, marshes, and moist meadows. Stunning in the summer acidic bog garden.

- Performs best in full sun or part shade in acidic, moist to wet soils. Best flower production occurs in full sun.

- Native to the eastern United States as well as the eastern provinces of Canada. This plant is listed as Endangered in Connecticut and Ohio and Threatened in Florida, Maryland, and Rhode Island.
