Potentilla nepalensis (Nepalese Cinquefoil) is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial forming a sprawling foliage mound of strawberry-like bright green leaves composed of five broad leaflets. From late spring to late summer, cup-shaped, dark red or dark pink flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), with five heart-shaped petals cover the foliage. They are borne in loose clusters on branched, reddish stems. A very tolerant and easily grown plant, surviving considerable neglect.

  • Grows up to 12-18 in. tall (30-45 cm) and 24 in. wide (60 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun or part shade, in poor to moderately fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils.
  • Great for beds and borders, cottage gardens, rock gardens, or border fronts.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Rarely if ever troubled by browsing deer.
  • Might die back naturally at the end of the season but otherwise cut back stems that remain to ground level in spring.
  • Propagate by seed sown in autumn or spring, or by division in autumn or spring.
  • Native to the Himalayas in Nepal.
