Solanum xanti (Purple Nightshade) is an erect to sprawling, semi-evergreen to evergreen, perennial or sub-shrub boasting a profusion of small, trumpet-shaped, purple flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), adorned with a bouquet of prominent yellow stamens. Blooming in late winter to late spring, the flowers are visited by butterflies and moths. Borne on slender stems, the blossoms give way to pea-sized purple berries. Birds feast on the fruit. The blossoms stand out nicely against the foliage of hairy, ovate to lance-shaped, dark green leaves, 2 in. long (5 cm). The leaves are summer deciduous if the plant is not given enough moisture. Solanum xanti is native to the western United States and Mexico, where it can be found growing in shrublands, oak/pine woodlands, and deciduous and coniferous forests in sandy, rocky, or clay soils. Purple Nightshade is best used in habitat restoration, perennial borders, water-wise, and native plant gardens.

  • Grows up to 2-3 ft. tall and wide (60-90 cm).
  • Thrives in full sun to part shade in a variety of dry, well-drained soils. Needs little irrigation in summer – maximum once a week once established. Drought tolerant. Plant in sun to part shade in coastal gardens and shady spots inland.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Deer resistant.
  • All parts of the plant are toxic to people and some animals.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses, toxic to humans.
  • Propagate by seed or semi-ripe cuttings.
