Yellow Pimpernel, Zizia integerrima
Taenidia integerrima (Yellow Pimpernel) is a long-lived herbaceous perennial boasting large, airy umbels consisting of about 12-15 umbellets adorned with 12 tiny, 5 petaled, yellow flowers. Blooming from late spring to mid-summer, the blossoms attract small bees, wasps, flies, and beetles. Borne on smooth, glaucous stems, they are followed by flattened, wingless fruits. The foliage of dull green, compound leaves with untoothed leaflets, emits an aroma reminiscent of celery when crushed. The caterpillars of the butterflies Papilio polyxenes asterias (Black Swallowtail) and Papilio joanae (Ozark Swallowtail) feed on the foliage of this plant. Native to eastern North America, Yellow Pimpernel can be found in rocky or gravelly woods and thickets, on open rocky slopes, and along roads. The root system consists of a taproot. Be sure to give it sufficient space when planting.
