Slow-growing, Trichocereus pasacana (Pasacana Tree Cactus) is a large columnar cactus with a strong branched habit. However, the stem remains solitary for a long while before it produces lateral branches. Up to 30 in. wide (75 cm), each stout, deep green stem features 20-30 deep ribs and large, brown areoles packed with a cluster of amber to dark-brown spines. From spring to summer, large, trumpet-shaped, rose-white flowers, 6 in. across (15 cm), open in the evening and last up to 3 days. Borne on the sides of the stems, they are followed by edible, dark green fruits, densely covered with hairs. Long-lived (300 years) and easy to grow, Pasacana Tree Cactus is reported to be cold-hardy down to 15°F (-9°C) for short periods. It adds long-lasting beauty to the landscape.

  • Grows up to 6-30 ft. tall (180-900 cm) and 12-30 in. wide (30-75 cm).
  • Easily grown in fertile, well-drained soils in full sun. Appreciates light shade when young. Water regularly in summer but allow to dry fully before watering again. Keep the plant dry in winter. Drought tolerant.
  • Great for desert gardens, rock gardens, succulent gardens, or Mediterranean gardens.
  • Deer resistant.
  • Propagate by seed or stem cuttings.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Susceptible to fungal diseases if over-watered.
  • Native to Argentina and Bolivia
