Tropaeolum peregrinum (Canary Creeper)

Canary Creeper, Canary Bird Flower

Tropaeolum peregrinum, Canary Creeper, Canary Bird Flower, Yellow Flowers

Tropaeolum peregrinum (Canary Creeper) is a frost-tender perennial climber boasting a profusion of spurred, bright yellow flowers from summer until the first frosts. The interesting flowers consist of two erect, large and fringed upper petals and three smaller lower petals, making the upper ones look like the wings of canaries. They contrast nicely against the foliage of pale blue-green, deeply five-lobed leaves, up to 2 in. across (5 cm). Canary Creeper is best grown as an annual in cool areas.

  • Grows up to 10-12 ft. tall (300-360 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in well-drained soils. Mulch in fall to protect from frosts.
  • Generally disease free. Keep an eye out for aphids, caterpillars, and flea beetles.
  • No pruning is needed.
  • Propagate by seed.
  • Native to Peru, Ecuador.
