A Dramatic Entryway

Perennial Combinations, Plant Combinations, Summer Borders, Hedge Ideas

Want a dramatic front yard? And privacy from the neighbors? Why don't you follow the steps of Joel Loblaw in the layered approach to this Tudor-style home's entryway? A warm, red brick walkway leads past tiered shrubs, grasses, and bushes, creating depth and privacy. Fragrant and colorful plantings – hydrangeas and white echinacea – offset the lush greenery, while climbing ivy gives the home a distinctive Cotswolds feel.

Planted at the back of the border is the majestic ornamental grass, Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora). Fronting this tall and elegant grass are stunning double-flowered Coneflowers (Echinacea) with their dense dome ringed with large white petals. Finally, at the very front of the border is the low-growing Blue Fescue Grass (Festuca glauca), a wonderful dwarf ornamental grass, mostly grown for its blue-green foliage.
