Coveted around the world, Vanda orchids are prized for their huge and long-lasting flowers. The flowers are typically bold and vivid, available in shades ranging from white, violet-blue, and pink to yellow. They are characterized by their wide, rounded petals and often have a fragrant, sweet scent.

Native Range: Vanda is a genus of 50 orchid species found throughout tropical Asia, into the Philippines, and down to Australia. They thrive in the tropical forests of these areas, where they grow as epiphytes on trees and receive filtered light through the forest canopy.

Plant Type and Habit: Vanda orchids are usually epiphytic, meaning they grow on other plants but are not parasitic. They have a monopodial growth habit, which means they grow upwards from a single stem. This growth form results in a rosette of leaves and long aerial roots essential for absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air.

Size: Most Vanda orchids grow to about 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) in height, with some varieties reaching up to 4 feet (120 cm). The inflorescences, or flower spikes, can also be lengthy, often stretching up to 2 feet (60 cm) or more, depending on the variety.

Flowers: One of the standout features of Vanda orchids is their large, showy flowers. The flowers can measure between 3-5 inches (7.5-12.5 cm) across and are known for their vibrant colors and intricate patterns. The blossoms are typically arranged on long, arching spikes that can bear multiple flowers, creating a stunning display. The flowers may come in various colors, including blue, purple, yellow, and white, often with contrasting markings or spots. Some species and hybrids are sweetly fragrant.

Bloom Time: Vanda orchids typically bloom once or twice a year, with the timing varying depending on the species and growing conditions. Many Vanda orchids bloom in late winter or early spring, although some may flower during other seasons. The blooming period can last several weeks, with individual flowers lasting about 1-2 weeks before fading.

Foliage: The foliage consists of long, leathery, and often narrow leaves up to 12 inches (30 cm) long. The leaves are typically arranged in a rosette pattern along the central stem. The color of the leaves can vary from deep green to bluish-green, and they may have a waxy appearance. T

Uses: These warm-growing tropical orchids are grown in the millions throughout Asia and in America. Most Vandas are grown in baskets that allow their long roots to hang freely. Their large, colorful blooms make them ideal for floral arrangements and displays. Vanda orchids are also used in traditional medicine and ceremonies in some cultures.

Vanda orchids are not a good choice for beginners as many species require bright light, warm temperatures, high humidity, ample water, and strong air movement. Some of these requirements can be difficult to follow at home.

Vanda Orchid Care

Light
Vanda orchids grow best when exposed to very bright light with some partial shade, especially on middays in summer. Provide strong air movement. Leaves should be medium green, not dark green, as dark green leaves indicate not enough light.

Temperatures
Most Vanda orchids need a minimum night temperature of 60-70°F (15-21°C) and a maximum daytime temperature of 95°F (35°C). Days should be warm and humid for optimum plant growth. The minimum night temperature recommended is 55°F (13°C).

Water
Water heavily during the active growth period, ensuring the roots always dry quickly after watering. Because of this and their extensive root system, Vanda orchids are mostly grown in slatted-wood baskets or in pots with a coarse potting medium. Water sparingly in the winter or during cloudy weather.

Humidity
Set the plant on a tray of gravel partially filled with water to maintain adequate humidity (80%).

Fertilization
Fertilize with a balanced (20-20-20) fertilizer applied at full strength once a week during warm weather, or use a one-quarter-strength solution at every watering. Apply fertilizer once every 2-4 weeks during cool or cloudy weather. Use a high-phosphorus fertilizer (10-30-20) every third application to promote flowering.

Potting
Potting is necessary when the plant’s rhizome protrudes over the edge of the pot or the potting medium starts to break down. This should be done in the spring. Use a coarse medium, such as fir bar, tree fern, or charcoal, and work it around the roots. Keep the roots shaded, humid, but drier until new root tips grow. Do not overpot.

Propagation
Propagate by division when the plant overflows the pot.

Pests and diseases
Vanda orchids are generally disease-free. Keep an eye out for aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites.

Tip for reblooming

Vanda orchids should bloom at least once a year. If your orchid does not flower, move it to a location where it will receive more light and sun. This may resolve the problem.
