Clematis - Montana Group

Group 1 Clematis (Clematis montana)

As climbers, Clematis are unsurpassed in their long flowering presence, their rich diversity of flower shapes, their wide array of colors and tolerances in terms of exposure and climate. It is no wonder they are so popular! From tree huggers to container varieties, there is a Clematis for every garden and flowers for almost every month of the year!

Members of the Ranunculaceae family, Clematis include more than 300 species, hundreds of hybrids and are divided into 12 main groups, each with consistent flower size, blooming season, pruning and garden use characteristics.

Healthy, sturdy, easy to please, the Montana group of clematis includes the most vigorous deciduous climbers within the clematis family. Their flowers are not as large or flashy as those of the large-flowered Clematis varieties, but they are full of charm, fragrant and so abundant! A plant can get covered with thousands of blooms, rewarding gardeners with a spectacular floral display. These Chinese natives are very strong growers and will happily throw their shoots in splendid flowering trails over arbors, trellises, pergolas and other garden structures.

  • These floriferous clematis produce an abundance of small, single or double, pink or white flowers.
  • Delightfully vanilla-scented, their fragrance fills the air as you pass by.
  • Most Montana clematis bloom profusely from late spring to early summer.
  • Many cultivars derived from Clematis montana var. rubens enjoy a lovely red-bronze foliage.
  • Extremely vigorous, these clematis can reach up to 20-40 ft. (6-12 m).
  • These clematis require moist, well-drained soils in full sun or part shade. Ideally, they prefer having their 'heads in the sun and their feet in the shade'. Keep the roots cool and shaded by other plants or add a layer of pebbles or flat stones at the base.
  • Montana clematis are very resistant to clematis wilt.
  • These clematis will quickly cover walls, fences or pergolas and maybe grown as showy, flowering groundcovers.
  • Since they bloom on the previous season's wood, they belong to the pruning group 1. No regular pruning required. Just clean them up after flowering.
