Noted for its unique blooms, Calochortus tolmiei (Tolmie Star-Tulip) is a charming perennial bulb boasting one or more bell-shaped white flowers delicately tinged with lavender or purple and silken hairs on the inner surfaces. They may be fringed with long hairs as well. Blooming from mid-spring to mid-summer, the blossoms are borne atop erect, slender stems. The blue-green basal leaves are born singly and can extend past the flowering stem. Native to the west coast of the United States, Tolmie Star-Tulip is found in scree and coastal meadows at low to moderate elevations, on flats and slopes, in mixed conifer forests, and from deep shade to sun. It requires well-drained soil and adds interest to perennial borders, wildflower meadows, rock gardens, and woodland gardens.

  • Grows up to 4-12 in. high (10-30 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun to part shade in sandy or loamy, dry, well-drained soils. Requires no water once established. Drought tolerant.
  • Avoid overwatering this plant and cut off dead leaves.
  • Keep an eye out for flies, beetles, aphids, mites, and thrips.
  • Plant your bulbs with this end down 5 in. deep (7-10 cm) and 6 in. apart (15 cm).
  • Propagate by seed. Sow as soon as ripe or early spring in a cold frame in a very sharply draining medium. Stratification may be helpful. Germination usually takes place within 1-6 months. Bulbs frequently divide after flowering, the bulblets taking 2 years to reach flowering size.
  • Native to the west coast of the United States: Washington, Oregon, and northern California.
