Ceanothus thyrsiflorus ‘Snow Flurry’ (California Lilac)

California Lilac 'Snow Flurry'

Ceanothus thyrsiflorus 'Snow Flurry', California Lilac 'Snow Flurry', White Flowers, Fragrant Shrubs, Evergreen Shrubs

A popular white-flowering California Lilac, Ceanothus thyrsiflorus ‘Snow Flurry’ is a large, sprawling evergreen shrub or small tree noted for its abundant clusters of fragrant, radiant white flowers in spring. The flowers are so profuse that they literally cover the shrub, transforming the plant in an explosion of white. Attractive to birds and bees, the blooms stand out against the large glossy dark green leaves and make an impressive display. Fast-growing with a rounded habit, this white California Lilac is adaptable and best grown as a tree. It may be groomed into an espalier on south-facing walls.

  • Grows up to 6-10 ft. tall (180-300 cm) and 8-12 ft. wide (240-360 cm). Its arching branches may root and form sprawling thickets.
  • Thrives in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Appreciates afternoon shade in hot summer areas. Grows well in sand or clay. Established plants need little summer water (once or twice a month). Drought tolerant.
  • With occasional pruning, this California Lilac cultivar can be maintained as a small tree or a tall hedge or screen. Perfect for coastal and inland situations in California.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings.
  • Keep an eye out for scale insects, honey fungus and Phytophthora root disease.
