Corylopsis pauciflora (Buttercup Winterhazel)

Buttercup Winterhazel, Buttercup Witch Hazel

Prized for its delicate fragrant blooms, Corylopsis pauciflora (Buttercup Winterhazel) is a slow-growing medium-sized deciduous shrub of great interest year around. In late winter to early spring, a profusion of scented, pale primrose yellow, bell-shaped flowers in short drooping racemes appear on the naked branches. They persist for several weeks and offer a lovely floral display. After flowering, small, ovate, bright green leaves, bronze when young, emerge for the summer and turn yellow in fall. Featuring a spreading habit, this multi-stemmed, flowering shrub is so dense that it is almost impossible to see through, even in winter.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
  • Grows up to 4-6 ft. tall and wide (120-180 cm).
  • This plant is best grown in full sun to part shade in acidic, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Provide a sheltered location to prevent damage from strong winds.
  • Great flowering shrub for mixed shrub borders and woodland gardens. An ideal choice for a small garden
  • Low maintenance, this plant is generally pest and disease free.
  • Prune as needed immediately after flowering.
  • Propagate by seed or semi-hardwood cuttings
  • Native to western Japan and Taiwan.
