Cotoneaster salicifolius (Willow Leaf Cotoneaster) is a vigorous, evergreen shrub with gracefully arching branches clothed in lance-shaped, glossy, leathery, dark green leaves, 4 in. long (10 cm). The leaves usually persist through winter and may blush to a pretty red if the weather becomes unusually cold. In late spring to early summer, the branches are studded with flat-topped clusters of white flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm). Attractive to bees, they are followed by a heavy crop of brilliant red berries which provide one of the most cheering sights in the garden. They persist in the winter, extending the season of interest of the plant. Easy to grow, Willow Leaf Cotoneaster can be planted in a shrub border for winter foliage and fruit effect. This is also a graceful screening or background plant.

  • Grows up to 15 ft. tall and wide (450 cm).
  • A full sun to partial shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soils. Tolerant of dry soils. Protect from cold dry winds.
  • Excellent for city gardens, coastal gardens, cottage gardens.
  • Keep an eye out for aphids, woolly aphid, webber moth caterpillars, brown scale, fireblight and honey fungus.
  • Prune immediately after flowering.
  • Propagate by seed or semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
  • Native to China, Tibet.
  • Fruit may cause mild stomach upset if ingested
