Incredibly eye-catching, Crinodendron hookerianum (Lantern Tree) is a fabulous medium-sized evergreen shrub native to Chile. Quite cold tolerant, this exotic beauty displays lantern-shaped, crimson flowers, 1in. long (2.5cm), that dangle on long stalks from the branches from late spring to late summer. They emerge from flower buds that form in the fall, hold through winter and swell at the beginning of the growing season to become these attractive cherry lanterns. Foliage consists of elegant, lance-shaped, leathery, deep green leaves. This plant appreciates mild areas and doesn’t take the heat or humidity.

  • Awarded the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society
  • Grows upright with a loose, open habit to 20 ft. high (6 m) and 15 ft. wide (5 m).
  • Easily grown in acidic, evenly moist, well-drained soils in full sun or part shade. Provide a sheltered location to protect it from cold winds. This shrub dislikes dry soils.
  • Great for wall-side borders, beds and borders, Mediterranean gardens or city gardens.
  • Virtually disease and pest free
  • Propagate by semi hartwood cuttings
