Disporum smilacinum (Japanese Fairy Bells) is a charming rhizomatous perennial with olive green, lance-shaped leaves and delicate, bell-shaped, white flowers that dangle at the stem ends in mid to late spring. They are followed by blue-black berries that ripen in the fall. A handsome woodland species that adds a perfect touch of class to the shade garden.

  • Grows up to 4-8 in. tall (10-20 cm) and 8-12 in. wide (20-30 cm).
  • Performs best in part shade in humus-rich, consistently moist, well-drained soils. Tolerates full shade.
  • Virtually disease free. Keep an eye out for slugs and snails.
  • Propagate by seed or by division.
  • Native to Japan, Korea & China.
