Fairy Bells
Primarily grown for its lovely foliage, Disporum sessile 'Variegatum' (Fairy Bells) is a spreading, rhizomatous perennial with arching stems clothed with lance-shaped, gray-green leaves attractively streaked and edged with white. In spring, small, bell-shaped, greenish-white flowers dangle at the stem ends. They are followed by blue-black berries that ripen in the fall. A handsome Fairy Bells selection to brighten shady areas of the landscape, where it will spread to form a colorful variegated ground cover.
- Grows up to 1-2 ft. tall (30-60 cm) and 1-3 ft. wide (30-90 cm). This plant spreads rapidly without being invasive.
- Performs best in part shade in humus-rich, consistently moist, well-drained soils. Tolerates full shade.
- Virtually disease free. Keep an eye out for slugs and vine weevils.
- Propagate by division of rhizomes in spring.
