Ideal for a rockery, Erodium chrysanthum (Silver Heronsbill) is a small evergreen perennial forming a dense mound of feathery, silvery green leaves. The beautiful silky foliage is handsome in its own right. Blooming for months from spring to late summer, lemon-scented, creamy yellow, geranium-like flowers, about 2 in. across (5 cm), are borne over the foliage. Silver Heronsbill is dioecious with separate male and female plants. Unless both are planted, the female flowers will not produce their interesting fruits with their long heron beaks. Native to Greece, Silver Heronsbill is an excellent perennial for rock gardens, containers, or mixed borders. Long-lived, easy, and adaptable, Silver Heronsbill is perfect for the water-wise garden.

  • Grows up to 4-10 in. tall (10-25 cm) and 8-24 in. wide (20-60 cm).
  • Performs best in gritty, well-drained soils in full sun. Drought tolerant, it requires little to no supplemental water once established. Protect from excessive winter wetness.
  • Good for beds and borders, rock gardens, and containers.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for vine weevil if grown in containers. Deer resistant.
  • Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in spring.
  • Propagate by division in spring, or by basal softwood cuttings in late spring and early summer.
  • Native to Greece.
