Hibiscus moscheutos 'Luna Red' (Hardy Hibiscus) is a compact and well-branched shrub noted for its huge, rich deep burgundy red flowers, 6-8 in. across (15-20 cm). Blooming continuously from mid to late summer, the gigantic flowers are adorned with conspicuous, protruding, creamy-white tubes of stamens. Each flower lasts about 1-2 days, but new flowers open each day in rapid succession until late in the season. The foliage of broadly ovate, dark green leaves is whitish beneath. Heat tolerant once established.
- Typically grows with an upright habit, up to 2-3 ft. tall (60-90 cm) and 24 in. wide (60 cm).
- Thrives in full sun in average, medium to wet soils. Prefers moist, organically rich soils but is drought tolerant once established. Site in locations protected from wind to minimize the risk of wind burn.
- Fairly pest and disease free. Watch for leaf spots, blights, rusts, canker and Japanese beetles. Deer resistant.
- Plant in shrub borders for dramatic summer blooms. Great flowering shrub along streams or ponds or large containers.
- Cut back stems to approximately 3-4 in. in late autumn (7-10 cm). Plants will benefit from regular fertilization during the growing season.
