Hibiscus 'Lord Baltimore' (Rose Mallow)

Lord Baltimore Hibiscus, Rose Mallow 'Lord Baltimore', Hardy Hibiscus 'Lord Baltimore'

A show-stopper, Hibiscus 'Lord Baltimore' (Rose Mallow) is a vigorous, shrubby herbaceous perennial noted for its extra large, bold crimson flowers, up to 10 in. across (25 cm). Each satiny bloom is adorned with ruffled, slightly overlapping petals and a prominent central staminal column. Blooming continuously from mid-summer to early fall, each dinner plate flower lasts 1 day, but new flowers open each day in rapid succession until late in the season. They are borne on reddish brown stems that are sturdy and erect and are almost woody at the base. They usually do not need staking. The ravishing blossoms contrast nicely against the foliage of deeply lobed, medium green leaves. Perfect at the back of a perennial border or as an airy screen or hedge. Lord Baltimore’ makes a great specimen on its own or in masses.

  • Typically grows up to 4-5 ft. tall (120-150 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm).
  • Thrives in full sun in average, medium to wet soils. Tolerates some light shade but best flower production and disease resistance occur in full sun. Prefers consistently moist, organically rich soils. Site in locations protected from wind to minimize the risk of wind burn.
  • Plant in perennial borders for dramatic summer blooms. Great along streams or ponds, in bog gardens or in rain gardens.
  • Keep an eye out for blight, canker, rust, leaf spots, aphids, scale, whiteflies and Japanese beetle. Deer resistant.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to maintain a neat appearance.
  • Cut down in spring before new growth appears.
  • It is best to plant Hibiscus in the garden before the heat of the summer arrives, and should be heavily mulched the first winter.
