Hydrocleys nymphoides (Water Poppy) is an emergent aquatic perennial with thick, shiny, broadly heart-shaped, dark green leaves, 2-4 in. (5-10 cm), on trailing stems up to 3 ft. long (90 cm). They usually float on the water surface, but occasionally rise above. In summer, the plant boasts showy light yellow flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm), adorned with a reddish-brown center and a bouquet of black or brown stamens. Rising up above the water surface, the blossoms last only one day, but they are produced in succession over a long summer period. Blooming occurs in water that has reached at least 70ºF (21ºC). Native to Central and South America, Water Poppy spreads from runners across the surface of the water, anchoring themselves by roots and producing new plants at their leaves. Water Poppy provides quick surface cover and can be utilized in ponds or water gardens.

  • Grows up to 6-12 in. tall (15-30 cm) and 1-5 ft. wide (30-150 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in moderately fertile wet loams up to 6 in. (15 cm) below the water surface. Will survive in water up to 12-15 in. deep, but prefers shallow conditions (6 in.)
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Propagate by seed or by dividing off floating stems that have produced roots (rooted plantlets).
  • Monitor the growth and thin as necessary.
  • Overwinter indoors in non-tropical climates in a shallow tub but keep moist and provide strong light.
  • Native to Central and South America.
  • Hydrocleys nymphoides has been recorded as invasive on several continents (Europe, Australia, and Asia). Find where it is invasive in the U.S.
