Introduced in 1975 by the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, Iris douglasiana ‘Canyon Snow’ (Douglas Iris) is a slowly spreading, rhizomatous evergreen perennial forming clumps of sword-shaped, bright shiny green leaves. Branched stems rise from the clumps in spring, each of them boasting large orchid-like flowers, 4-5 in. across (10-12 cm), adorned with brilliant yellow markings on each petal. Very handsome in and out of bloom, Douglas Iris truly enjoys meadow settings. Perfect for tucking into rock gardens or to edge woodland borders.
