Kalanchoe beharensis ‘Fang’ (Felt Plant)

Felt Plant, Felt Bush, Velvet Leaf Kalanchoe, Stalactite Plant 'Fang'

AGM Award
Kalanchoe beharensis 'Fang', Felt Plant, Felt Bush, Velvet Leaf Kalanchoe, Stalactite Plant 'Fang', succulent plant, Drought tolerant plant

Noted for its eccentric appearance, award-winning Kalanchoe beharensis ‘Fang’ (Felt Plant) is a bushy, often tree-like perennial succulent with velvety, triangular to lance-shaped, long-stalked leaves. Bronze on the upper surface, with silver-gray undersides, the large fleshy leaves, up to 4 in. long (10 cm), are covered with fine silver hairs and display many gnarly, fang-like protuberances on the undersides. Their cupped form and undulating edges add to the unique character of this plant. Mature plants produce long-stalked clusters of small, urn-shaped, red-orange, or greenish-yellow flowers. While the flowers are interesting, this plant is mostly grown for its extraordinary foliage. Heat tolerant but cold tender, this plant does well in the garden and containers.

  • Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
  • Slowly grows, with an upright habit, to 2-3 ft. tall (60-90 cm) and 1-2 ft. wide (30-60 cm).
  • Easily grown in well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out each time before watering again. Water sparingly during the winter so that the soil stays barely moist. Apply a balanced fertilizer 3-4 times during the spring, summer, and early fall. Drought and heat tolerant.
  • Watch for aphids, mealybugs, downy mildew, and leaf spot.
  • Excellent for beds and borders, succulent gardens or Mediterranean gardens. Perfect for containers where spectacular floral arrangements can be created.
  • Propagate by seed in spring or from stem cuttings in summer.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats.
  • Native to Madagascar
